The Clerks Report

Be it recorded that the gentlemen of the Society of Archers were met at Scorton on May 24th 1986.

The meeting was heralded by the sound of the Lieutenants bugle. 97 archers assembled to compete for the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow and other trophies.

Shooting commenced at 10.45 with the Captain and Lieutenant being first to shoot. The first item of note was the piercing of the black spot within the inner Gold with the second arrow from the first end by Major R M Crees who thus became the Captain elect and holder of the Silver Arrow for the ensuing year. The next arrow to pierce the red was that of Mr P Davies who thus became the new Lieutenant. Shooting continued for 2 hours after which the Captain and Gentlemen adjourned to take luncheon and to hold the 278th meeting of the Society.

After the meeting shooting resumed for a further two hours whereafter the Gentlemen retired for tea and the presentation of prizes by the Captain's Lady, Mrs R Scudamore.

Closing the meeting the Captain thanked the scorers, judge, clerk and the members of the Company of Scorton for their invaluable assistance.

Collected for the poor of the Parish £31.06.

An Arrow for Africa £130.16

Judge for the meeting Stan Snow.

Minutes of the 1986 meeting

The meeting was opened by the Captain, who proposed the Loyal Toast.

The Clerk welcomed, on behalf of the society, visitors, Derek Holt, Captain - 1962 and Denis Theaker, Captain - 1968, who presented the Society with some of Ben Hird's photographs and other items of considerable interest.

With the strong interest in the sport aid events, it was suggested that the first end after Luncheon should be 'An Arrow for Africa' with contributions in inverse proportion to their scores - Gold, one shilling - Red, two shillings, etc., down to a miss at one pound. A suggestion that half these rates be applied to the Longbowmen met with short shrift.

The business of the 278th Recorded Meeting was commenced with a toast to the Society and the Arrow. The Clerk dealt with correspondence, commencing with H M The Queen's gracious reply to our loyal address. Apologies were received, from Bud Broughton, and Alain Holt, for their absence.

The question of dress was discussed and it was agreed that we should continue to encourage Gentlemen to mark the prestige of the meetings, but without making an issue of failure to conform. A request was received for a supply of ties and cravats, the Clerk undertook to deal with this matter.

The meeting closed with a toast to the Captain-Elect and Lieutenant-Elect.
