The 17th day of May 2014 saw gentlemen gather at Brayton Sports College, Selby for the 306th Recorded meeting of the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow Tournament. The day was warm and sunny with little wind.

Lieutenant Derek Wilcock sounded the bugle to bring the gentleman to order. Captain and Clerk, Andrew Neal gave the usual Captain’s address, together with introducing the Judges.

Shooting got underway at 10.30am prompt with the Captain and Lieutenant taking aim. With neither gold nor red hit this lead to the rest of the archers shooting. It was quickly established at the first end that the Lieutenancy had been won by Tom Fewz.

At the very next end the first black spot was recorded by a Chantry Bowman, John Wilkinson. Warm congratulations were passed to John with plenty of comments flowing from his merry band of fellow Chantry archers.

Following the regulatory two hours of shooting the judges called a halt to the morning session, with lunch taken in the college. A splendid lunchoen was had, washed down with a plentiful supply of alcoholic beveridge.

The Captain/Clerk, kept the meeting to an minimum with no formal proposals for discussion. The Captain made an emotional speech regarding his chosen charity in connection with his wife’s ongoing illness. With no other discussions this enabled shooting to start again at 3.15pm.

The Judges marshalled the afternoon session well with the usual good humoured banter between archers with shooting called to a close after the alloted 2 hours.

After tea the Trophies were presented to the deserving winners. The Captain’s presentations were made to the Lady Scorers, and the usual bottles to the two judges, all done graciously by the Captain. (In the presence of the Captain’s Lady)

The meeting was rounded off by the retiring Captain passing his thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the day.

Donations from the gentlemen together with the proceeds of the swear bag resulted in a donation of £320 being made to the Selby Young Carers charity.

Minutes of the 306th Meeting - 17 May 2014

The Captain and Clerk, Andrew Neal, asked those present to be up standing for the Loyal Toast. Gentlemen archers, who had shot the bow with the Captain in the morning, were asked to remain standing whilst guests retired from the room.

The Captain then proposed the toasts to The Society and The Arrow, The Captain and Lieutenant Elect and absent friends.

The Lieutenant, Dereck Wilcock, read the minutes of the 305th meeting. These were accepted as a true record, with the Captain duly signing the Record Book.

Apologies for absence were received beforehand from Doug Pattinson, Ian Colley, Jeremy Spykerman, Geoff Oliver, Philip Rolls, Stephen Daniel, Ron Nuttall, Paul Tucker and Albert Kiddy.

The following matters were discussed:

• The Clerk reported the Loyal Message and White Rose had been sent to Her Majesty, The Queen, and two separate replies had been received, one in relation to the letter sent and one in response to the White Rose.

• It was pointed out that Danny Cameron has been asked by Philip Rolls to take over the operation of the Society’s Website. Danny has agreed to do this.

• The accounts for The Society were presented for agreement. It was highlighted the excellent funds raised by the Bow/Arrow raffle in 2013. Adrian Hayes has again provided a bow for raffle this year. The bow has not yet been made but will be to the specification requested by the winner of the raffle. There were no matters arising concerning the accounts and these were duly approved by the Gentlemen present.

• No formal requests for matters to be discussed had been received before the meeting.

• The Captain/Clerk highlighted the ever increasing cost of postage to send out invites and schedules to members, over £130 in the last year. He requested the approval of those present to send out correspondence from the Clerk or Captain via electronic means, for those who are prepared to forgo paper communications. He stressed that paper communications would still be made available to those who requested it. Some lengthy debate about how this should be achieved ensued. It was pointed out that the method of communication for invites and schedules is not contained within the Articles, so does not need to be formally proposed or voted upon. It was agreed the two communications routes would run in parallel and that the invites and entry forms would still be available on the website too.

• A request was made that the Captain and Lieutenant Elects, wives or partners be invited to sit at the top table for lunch. The Captain/Clerk pointed out that it was up to the new Captain each year to determine who should sit at the top table, providing this included the two Captains and two Lieutenants, and the Clerk.

• The Captain explained that the money raised by the swear bag would be presented to the Selby Young Carers, a local charity.

• It was pointed out that the current Society Record Book is almost full, and that a new Book would be needed. A request was made for any information which would help in finding a manufacturer for a new book.

• The Clerk pointed out that he would have inscription plates added to the new Tri-Centennial Trophy.

• The outgoing Captain, Andrew Neal presented the Captain and Lieutenant elect, with their Captain and Lieutenant badges.

There being no further business the meeting was closed at 14.42.
